Fatima’s World - A Month in Review
Identity has always been an ever-evolving journey for me. Through the different phases and stages of my life, I've transformed into several versions of myself, each time getting closer to my core being. I believe our true self traces back to our child-like self: free, curious, and brave.
It’s amazing how the path becomes clearer when you’re truly tuned into your inner world - your inner voice. Each of us are creating the blueprint to our lives. The answers we’re often looking for are already within. What you seek you will find. I’ve found a lot of things this month, including, a better understanding of my sense of style.
Personal style is a reflection of who we are and it allows us to express ourselves without using words. Everyday we’re telling a story with the outfit we put on to run errands, to work, or at simply relaxing at home. The best part about fashion and style is getting to experiment and seeing what works and what doesn’t. What you may have worn or liked last year, may be totally different from what you wear and like today. I think life is all about trying different things and deciding what ultimately works best for you.
This month I also got the exciting opportunity to visit The Sable Collective, a boutique in Philly owned by Shanti Mayers. I got to tour her beautiful studio adorned with jewelry, clothing, and homeware (all sourced from Black, Brown, and women makers by the way!). I also interviewed her about her personal style, the cultural influences that shape her fashion point of view, and her journey as a business owner.
WHAT I…
Enjoyed most in this month!
WHAT I BOUGHT
I’m in my heels era (even if they’re kitten heels). I think they elevate any and every look. I was inspired to get these after I saw a photo of Brooke DeVard of Naked Beauty, wearing the cutest pair of sandal heels. I walked into Nordstrom Rack one day and I saw these beauties! As I tried them on, a fellow shopper complimented them and said she was looking for an exact pair. We rejoiced when she found them in her size. And while I don’t know if she ended up buying them, I know I did! I love them.
WHAT I WATCHED
Ahead of the 2025 Met Gala and its “Tailored for You” theme exploring Black dandyism, I watched The Gospel According to André, a documentary about the life and legacy of André Leon Talley. Aside from learning about Talley’s upbringing and experience in the fashion world, what stuck with me most were the words he said in the beginning of the documentary: “Create your own universe, and share it with people that you, respect and love.”
WHAT I LISTENED TO
I’m a fan of Mariah the Scientist’s music. Her songwriting hits deep, and as a fellow Scorpio, I understand the intensity and passion that flows from her pen.“Burning Blue” dropped in early May, after a snippet she shared back in April circulated the internet like wildfire. And let me tell you, it was worth the wait. This song has been on repeat ever since. You can enjoy this song and other songs I listened to in May on this playlist I created on Apple Music!
WHAT I DID
It was a concert-filled month! I went to the Rema concert at Madison Square Garden with my sisters in early May, and then I went to not one, but two Cowboy Carter concerts with my cousin at MetLife Stadium this past week. Both experiences were fun and were my first time going to either venue. Live music is always a great time, especially with the people you love!
BEAUTY FAVORITE
My go-to beauty favorite!
I’m currently on a haircare journey growing out my pixie and transitioning from relaxed to natural. *Cécred’s Reconstructing Treatment Mask has been a game changer in my routine. I see a visible difference in shedding and overall strength in my hair after using this product for the last couple of months.
WHAT I WORE
Outfits I wore this month!
Bonus: I made a YouTube video putting together 3 outfits I’d wear on a lunch date!
